Marketing to developers is nothing like marketing to anyone else. Engineers don’t respond to banner ads, they don’t trust polished sales copy, and they can smell a thinly-veiled pitch from three paragraphs away. If you’re building a content marketing strategy aimed at technical audiences in 2026, the platform you choose matters almost as much as what you write. Here’s a look at the developer news platforms actually driving results this year, and what makes each one worth a spot in your distribution plan.

Hacker News: Small Audience, Outsized Impact

Hacker News remains the single highest-leverage platform for developer-focused content, and the data backs it up. One recent comparison found that a technical launch post on Hacker News drove roughly six times the enterprise trial conversion rate of the same campaign run on Reddit, even though Reddit pulled in more than double the raw traffic. The lesson here isn’t that Hacker News is bigger — it’s smaller and far more selective — but that the people reading it are disproportionately decision-makers who convert. Cloudflare’s technical breakdown of their DNS resolver is a good example: a long, detailed post that held the top spot for half a day and pulled in tens of thousands of visits, simply because it respected readers enough to go deep instead of staying promotional.

The catch is that Hacker News punishes anything that reads like marketing. A “Show HN” post needs to be genuinely useful or technically interesting on its own merits, with a title that describes the product plainly rather than trying to sell it. Companies like Tailscale have built real audience trust here by consistently publishing content their own engineers would actually want to read.

Dev.to: Organic Reach Through Community, Not Ads

Dev.to works on a different model entirely. Instead of paid placement, it thrives on tag-based discovery and genuine community participation. Brands that succeed here tend to treat it less like a channel and more like a place to show up consistently — answering questions, contributing tutorials, and letting developers discover the company through useful content rather than a pitch. It’s a slower build than a paid campaign, but the credibility it generates tends to stick.

daily.dev Ads: Native Placement at Scale

For marketers who want more predictable reach, daily.dev’s advertising platform has become one of the more effective paid options, reaching over a million developers through native in-feed placements. Click-through rates in the 0.8–1.5% range might sound modest compared to consumer advertising benchmarks, but for a developer audience that’s actively filtering out anything that smells like an ad, that’s a solid signal. It tends to work best for mid-funnel campaigns — introducing a tool to developers who are already in a research mindset rather than trying to cold-sell something unfamiliar.

    Hashnode: Depth Over Volume

Hashnode has built a loyal following of over a million and a half monthly readers by prioritizing personalized, in-depth technical blogging. Engagement rates above 3% aren’t unusual for strong posts, which is notably higher than most content platforms manage. Sponsored content works here, but only when it reads like a genuine technical guide rather than an advertisement — developers on this platform are quick to notice when transparency about sponsorship is missing, and that erodes trust fast. For brands willing to invest in real editorial quality, newsletter sponsorships on Hashnode can also put content in front of a highly engaged, already-subscribed audience.

Medium: Long-Form Awareness, Not Direct Response

Medium plays a different role in the funnel. It’s not built for conversions the way Hacker News or daily.dev can be — it’s a top-of-funnel awareness play, driven by storytelling rather than technical minutiae. Its audience skews broader than pure engineers, pulling in product managers and technical decision-makers alongside developers, which makes it a reasonable choice when your content needs to speak to a mixed technical and business audience rather than engineers exclusively.

Carbon Ads: The Quiet, Trusted Option

Carbon Ads takes the opposite approach from native in-feed placements — a single, privacy-friendly ad per page, deliberately understated. It won’t generate the volume of a bigger platform, but its long-standing reputation among developer blogs and documentation sites means the ads it does serve tend to be well-received rather than tuned out.

The New Variable: AI Answer Engines

There’s a newer factor reshaping this whole landscape that didn’t exist a few years ago: developers increasingly research tools by asking AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude before ever visiting a company’s website. That means content now needs to be written clearly enough that both a human developer and a language model extracting information from it come away with an accurate picture. Companies that write vague, keyword-stuffed content are starting to lose visibility not just in search results, but in the AI-generated summaries that increasingly shape a developer’s first impression of a product.

    Building a Realistic Channel Mix

No single platform covers every stage of a developer’s journey. A workable strategy usually combines a high-conversion, low-volume channel like Hacker News for launches and technical deep-dives, a steady community presence on Dev.to or Hashnode for ongoing credibility, and a paid option like daily.dev Ads when predictable reach matters more than organic discovery. What ties all of it together is the same principle developers apply to everything else they read: does this actually teach me something, or is it just trying to sell me something wearing a technical costume? Get that answer right, and the platform choice becomes secondary — the content itself does the work.
